It’s no secret that I love designing fingerless crochet glove patterns. I think they look so elegant and can really finish off an outfit plus they keep your wrists and arms so cosy and warm!

This cable wrist warmer pattern is so much simpler than it looks and you’ll have yourself a pair made in no time.

They were originally designed for and featured in Simply Crochet magazine back in in 2016 so we must have known that the trend for Outlander fingerless gloves like these was on it’s way even back then!

How do you crochet cable gloves like these?

The wrist warmers (but I suppose you could class them as fingerless mitts) are made from a simple rectangle that is seamed at the side leaving a space for the thumbhole.

The crochet cable stitch section is added with a slight variation for the right and left mitt so that the pattern faces the same way but it’s nice and easy once you’ve made one.

You can add a second pop of colour like I have or just have them one solid colour – entirely up to you!

Finally you add the cuffs to the bottom and the top which you can adjust to your liking too. Such an easy pair of cabled crochet gloves to customise!

Yarn for the wrist warmer pattern

To make my version of the cable crochet wrist warmers I used DROPS Karisma DK , 100% wool, 50g/100m, Category #3 weight.

I used 2 balls of colour A and 1 ball of colour B. A total of approximately 220m.

I often get asked about ideas for alternative yarns and so here are some great options that I think will also give you a fabulous pair of cable crochet wrist warmers.

It’s really important to choose a yarn that has good stitch definition for the cable stitches but that is also warm and cosy of course.

Here are some that I think would work really well for this pattern in various price ranges:

• Swish DK by WeCrochet :100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool; 123yds/50g
• DROPS Cotton Merino: 50% fine merino, 50% Egyptian cotton; 110m/50g
• Capra DK by WeCrochet: 85% fine merino, 15% cashmere, 123yds/50g

Tension and Sizing

The crochet wrist warmers are one size fits all and will fit an average adult hand.

The finished fingerless mitts measure 10.5″ by 9″ (27cm by 22.5cm).

16 sts and 10 rows measure 10cm x 10cm (4″ x 4″) over main set pattern using a 4mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension.

Materials

Along with your yarn, you will need the following:

• A 4mm(G) crochet hook- my favourites are Furls Streamline Swirl crochet hooks or Clover Amour crochet hooks.
• Scissors
• Tapestry Needle

ch(s) – chain(s)

sp – space

ss – slip stitch

RS – right side

Crochet Stitches

The stitches used in the gloves are as follows:

sc – single crochet (UK dc – double crochet)

hdc – half double crochet (UK htr – half treble crochet)

dc – double crochet (UK tr – treble crochet)

tr – treble crochet (UK dtr – double treble crochet)

Special Stitches

The wrist warmers use a really beautiful crochet cable stitch that is worked in rows. I really love crochet cables and feel like people are much more scared of them than they need to be!

For cable stitches you’ll need to know how to work around the front and the back of a post as follows:

Back Post Crochet Stitch

To work the back post, yarn over, reaching over top of the piece and working on opposite or right side of the work, insert the hook from right to left around vertical post of next stitch, yarn over and complete the stitch.

Front Post Crochet Stitch

To work the front post, yarn over, insert hook from front to back and to front again around the vertical post (upright part) of next st, yoh and draw yarn through, yoh and complete stitch.

Pattern Notes

A ch1 at the beginning of a row or round does not count as a stitch.

A ch3 at the beginning of a row does count as a stitch (alternatively use standing stitches if you prefer).

Turn at the end of each row.

The pattern is written in standard US crochet terms.

US Crochet Terminology

LEFT MITT:

Foundation chain: using A, ch38

Row 1: dc in 4th from hook and each across, change to B. [36]

Row 2: ch1, sc in each st across, change to A.

Row 3: Rep R2, change to B.

Row 4: Rep R2, change to A.

Row 5: ch3, dc in each st across.

Row 6: ch3, dc in next 20, skip next 3sts, FPtr in next 3 sts, working behind the sts just made, FPtr in 3 skipped sts, FPdc in next 3 sts, dc in last 6 sts.

Row 7: ch1, hdc in next 6 sts, BPdc in next 9 sts, hdc in next 21 sts.

Row 8: ch3, dc in next 20 sts, FPdc in next 3 sts, skip next 3 sts, FPtr in next 3 sts, working behind the sts just made, FPtr in 3 skipped sts, dc in last 6 sts.

Row 9: Rep R7.

Rows 6-9 create the set pattern.

Repeat the set pattern 4 more times.

Row 26: change to B, rep R2, change to A.

Row 27: Rep R2, change to B.

Row 28: Rep R2, change to A.

Row 29: ch3, dc in each st across.

Continue for arm cuff.

ARM CUFF:

Continuing with working yarn, ch5.

Row 1: sc in 2nd and each to end of chain, skip next st on R29, ss in next st of R29, turn. [4]

Row 2: ch1, sc in blo of each, turn.

Row 3: ch1, sc in blo of each, skip next st in R29, ss in next st of R29, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 to end of cuff, turn the work so that the cable is facing inwards and ss seam the cuff together to join the last row to the first row.

HAND CUFF:

Join A to foundation chain, repeat as for arm cuff but start with a ch3 instead of ch5.

RIGHT MITT:

As for Left but the cable section is as follows:

Row 6: ch3, dc in next 5 sts, FPdc in next 3 sts, skip next 3 sts, FPtr in next 3 sts, working behind the sts just made, FPtr in 3 skipped sts, dc in next 21 sts.

Row 7: ch1, hdc in next 21 sts, BPdc in next 9 sts, hdc in last 6 sts.

Row 8: ch3, dc in next 5 sts, skip next 3 sts, FPtr in next 3 sts, working behind the sts just made, FPtr in 3 skipped sts, FPdc in next 3 sts, dc in last 21 sts.

Row 9: Repeat Row 7.

TO SEW SEAMS:

With the cable facing inwards, sew the mitt seam along the sides of the rows, leaving an opening from Rows 2-9 for the thumbhole.

TO FINISH

Weave in ends and block to measurements.
